Elegant BC Chardonnay
*Every Friday I pick a bottle from the wine list and open it for the staff. Here’s what we drank this week.*
For 21 years the Mavety family supplied premium grapes to commercial wineries when finally the allure of producing quality wines inspired them to craft their own label in 1991. In that time, they had championed new grape varieties in the region, honed their viticulture skills and developed their wine making techniques. Today, on their 31-hectare estate, they make limited quantities of complex wines from noble varietals including Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay — the same varietals found in the Champagne, Burgundy and Alsace regions of France.
Five different Chardonnay clones make up the blend that is a 50/50 mix of barrel-and tank-fermented juice to keep it lively. Expect a crisp, mineral, citrus-flavoured entry with bits of toasted oak and lees. The style is elegant and reserved with a bright, lemon, toasted-fruit finish.
For those looking for that big buttery style then look elsewhere. If Chablis is your thing than this if the BC wine for you.
Cheers,
Josh
